Car financing in Edmonton

Short answer: OCAL Financial arranges car financing for Edmonton drivers from start to finish online. You apply in about two minutes with a soft credit check, a lender in our network decides, and we source, inspect and deliver a vehicle that fits the approval. We have an Edmonton office at 10515 103 Ave NW, but you never need to visit.

How does car financing work in Edmonton with OCAL?

It works in six steps, and the lender decides before anyone picks a vehicle. One specialist stays with your file the whole way.

  1. Apply. Complete the online application in about two minutes. The soft credit check leaves your score alone.
  2. Match. Your file goes to the lenders in our network that suit it, from prime to subprime.
  3. Approve. The lender makes the final approval. Most applicants hear back the same business day.
  4. Source. We find a vehicle that fits your approval through the OPENLANE auction network and partner dealers, and inspect it before delivery.
  5. Sign. You go over the contract, including the total cost of borrowing, usually about seven days after applying.
  6. Drive. Funding and delivery follow three or four days after signing.

Do you need to visit our Edmonton office?

No, even though our Alberta office is downtown at 10515 103 Ave NW. The application, your documents and the contract all happen from your phone, and the vehicle comes to you. The local office does mean the people on your file know the city, including why a truck parked outside all winter needs a block heater.

We keep zero standing inventory and don't lend or set rates. There's no rate markup; rates vary by credit, as our car loan rates page explains.

What do you need to apply for a car loan in Edmonton?

You need a valid driver's licence, proof of income and proof of address. The lender may also want pay stubs or bank statements.

A lot of Edmonton income isn't a steady biweekly cheque. Camp rotations in Fort McMurray, turnaround work and seasonal construction all count when they can be verified. Stubs that show your rotation, or CRA Notices of Assessment if you're self-employed, carry weight. See our guide to self-employed car loans.

What credit score do you need for a car loan in Edmonton?

No single score is required, because each lender sets its own criteria and every credit profile is considered. Lenders weigh your score alongside income stability, existing debt, time at your job and address, the down payment and the vehicle. Most lenders want verifiable income of roughly $1,800 to $2,000 a month.

A down payment helps even when it isn't required, because it lowers what you borrow. Rebuilding after collections or a repossession? See bad credit car loans. Applying uses a soft check; the hard inquiry comes only when you accept an approval and a specific vehicle.

Can you finance a truck or AWD vehicle for Edmonton winters?

Stock photo, not the actual vehicle

Yes. On a minus 35 morning on the Anthony Henday, or crawling along Whitemud Drive after a snowfall, plenty of Edmonton drivers want all-wheel drive or a pickup. On the QEII or Highway 63, clearance and four-wheel drive matter even more.

The trade-off is age and kilometres: lenders are more careful with older, high-kilometre trucks, and some won't go past a set limit. See used truck financing in Alberta.

Do you deliver to Edmonton and northern Alberta?

Yes, we deliver anywhere in Edmonton and across Alberta, including St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc, Beaumont, Fort Saskatchewan, Morinville, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Whitecourt, Lloydminster, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray and Red Deer.

Northern delivery takes longer than a delivery inside the Henday. The Alberta service area page covers the whole province, and car financing in Calgary covers the south.

Can you trade in your current vehicle?

Yes, we take trade-ins as part of the deal. If you owe more than it's worth, some lenders will roll the difference into the new loan, but negative equity raises your total cost.

If you only want to sell, Sell Your Car takes about two minutes to list. Licensed dealers bid within 24 hours, it's free to list, we pick up from your home, you're paid by e-transfer and any lien is settled from the proceeds.

What taxes and costs apply when you buy a car in Alberta?

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so a dealer sale carries 5% GST. If you trade in a vehicle you own personally, GST is charged on the price minus the trade-in allowance. This is general information, not tax advice.

Insurance comes from a private insurer, and you'll need proof of insurance and registration at an Alberta registry agent office before driving. The loan calculator lets you test amounts and terms.

Good questions from Edmonton drivers

Can I come into your Edmonton office?

Our office is at 10515 103 Ave NW, but you don't need to come in. Everything happens from your phone, and we deliver the vehicle to you.

Will applying affect my credit score?

No. The application uses a soft credit check, which does not affect your score.

I work camp in Fort McMurray but live in Edmonton. How does that work?

Tell your specialist your rotation when you apply. Where we can, we schedule signing and delivery around your days home.

How long does delivery take to Grande Prairie or Fort McMurray?

Longer than in the city. Delivery usually follows three or four days after signing, and northern addresses add a few days.

I'm a student with no credit history. Can I apply?

Yes, with verifiable income. Our first car loan guide explains what lenders look for on a thin file.

I went through a bankruptcy. Can I still get a car loan?

You can apply, and some lenders in our network work with discharged bankruptcies, though rates run higher than prime. Read about getting a car loan after bankruptcy.

Is OCAL the lender?

No. We handle the transaction from application to delivery and sell you the vehicle. The lender makes the final approval.
