Used truck financing in Alberta

Short answer: Yes, you can finance a used truck in Alberta with any credit story. You get pre-qualified with a soft credit check, the lender makes the final approval, and then OCAL, an AMVIC-licensed business, sources an F-150, Silverado, Sierra, Tacoma or whatever fits your approval and delivers it to your door. Financing is OAC.

Need a truck for work, family or towing?

Approval and payment usually decide the deal, not the Kijiji price. Plenty of Albertans find the right truck first and discover the financing second, at a lot, on a Saturday, with the numbers already stretched. We do it the other way round: financing sorted first, then the truck.

That matters more with trucks than with cars. A crew cab 4x4 costs more to buy, more to insure and more to run, and lenders look harder at age and kilometres on a truck that has been worked. Knowing your real budget before you start looking saves a lot of wasted weekends.

How does OCAL help? Financing first, then the truck

The same six steps as everything we do, described in full on how car financing works in Alberta: apply from your phone in about two minutes with a soft credit check, get matched with lenders that fit your file, get the lender's decision, have the truck sourced from the OPENLANE auction network and partner dealers, sign digitally, and take delivery anywhere in Alberta. Most applicants hear back the same business day, and application to signed contract usually takes about a week.

What do lenders look at on a used truck?

Age, kilometres and condition come first, because they set what the truck is worth to the lender over the loan term. Then the details that drive price and payment: half-ton or midsize, 4x4 or two-wheel drive, crew cab or regular cab, and the trim. A newer truck with fewer kilometres usually qualifies for a longer term and a better rate. A truck that has hauled for a living may need a shorter term or more money down. Your specialist walks you through it before you commit. Try the payment calculator or read how loan rates work. No rates or payments are quoted until a lender has reviewed your file.

Which model years can be financed?

As a rule of thumb, lenders in our network finance used trucks from roughly the 2018 model year onward, with room either side depending on kilometres and condition. If the reliable older truck you have your eye on falls outside that window, tell us anyway. Sometimes there's a lender for it, and sometimes the better answer is a slightly newer truck at a payment that works.

Which trucks do we finance most in Alberta?

Stock photo, not the actual vehicle

Ford F-150

The most common request we get, from Calgary to Grande Prairie. Crew cab 4x4s hold their value well, which helps on the lending side. Tell your specialist the configuration you need and we source it after your approval.

Chevrolet Silverado

A favourite for work trucks and for anyone who wants a proven V8. Lenders treat Silverado and Sierra as the same family, so the same age and kilometre rules apply.

GMC Sierra

Same platform as the Silverado with a different badge and, on higher trims, a nicer cab. If you're open to either, say so; it widens the search.

Toyota Tacoma

The midsize choice for people who don't need a full half-ton and want the resale strength Toyota is known for. Tacomas hold their price, so a slightly older one can still qualify well.

Does rotation, camp or self-employed income count?

Yes, when it's documented. Lenders want to see steady income, not a steady schedule. Rotation, camp, oilfield and contract income is considered with recent pay stubs or bank statements. If you're self-employed or run a small trade, bank statements or notices of assessment do the job; see car loans when you're self-employed. We don't promise commercial or business exemptions; we do know how to present a working Albertan's income properly.

Can I trade in my car or old truck?

Yes. A trade-in is taken as part of the deal and its value comes off what you borrow. If you still owe on it, the payout is settled from the trade-in value. If you owe more than it's worth, the difference is negative equity; some lenders allow part of it on the new loan, which raises your payment, so we show you both numbers first. Read about trading in with negative equity or sell or trade in your car to see what dealers will bid.

What about credit and the soft check?

Every credit profile is considered: strong, bruised, thin or rebuilding after a consumer proposal or bankruptcy. Checking your options is a soft inquiry that doesn't affect your score. A hard inquiry happens only with your consent, once you've accepted an approval for a specific truck. Approval is always the lender's decision, OAC, and rates vary by credit. If you're rebuilding, start with bad credit car loans.

Calgary, Edmonton and across Alberta

We deliver anywhere in Alberta you can register a vehicle: Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Lloydminster and the communities between. Northern and remote deliveries take a little longer, and we give you a date before you sign. See car financing in Calgary and car financing in Edmonton.

Good questions about truck financing

Can I finance a used truck in Alberta?

Yes. Every credit profile is considered, the lender makes the final approval, and the truck is delivered to your door. Financing is OAC.

What year of used truck can I finance?

Roughly 2018 and newer as a rule of thumb, with some flexibility for low kilometres and good condition. Ask about anything older; the answer depends on the lender and the truck.

Can I finance an F-150 or Silverado with less-than-perfect credit?

Often, yes. Lenders in our network look at income, stability and the truck, not only the score. Expect a higher rate than a prime borrower and, sometimes, a request for a down payment.

How does used truck financing work in Calgary or Edmonton?

The same way as anywhere in Alberta: apply from your phone, get the lender's decision, and we source and deliver the truck. There's no lot to visit in either city.

Will checking my options hurt my credit?

No. It's a soft inquiry. A hard inquiry needs your consent, once you've chosen a specific truck.

Can I trade in my car or old truck and finance the rest?

Yes. The trade-in value comes off what you borrow, and any loan on it is settled from the proceeds. We show you the numbers, including any negative equity, before you decide.

I work rotation or I'm self-employed. Can I still finance a truck?

Yes, with documented income: pay stubs or bank statements for rotation and camp work, bank statements or notices of assessment if you're self-employed. See all financing FAQs for more.
