Your Car Was Written Off. Here's How to Be Driving Again by Next Week.

Car written off by insurance? Here's what the payout covers, what to do if you still owe money, and how to be driving again within days.

The call usually comes two or three days after the accident. The adjuster is polite, maybe even upbeat. The repair estimate came in higher than the car is worth, so they're not fixing it — they're writing it off. You'll get a settlement figure, they say, once you sign a few things.

And somewhere between hanging up and making dinner, three problems land on you at once. You don't have a car. The number they offered feels smaller than what the car was worth to you. And if you were still making payments, some or all of that cheque may already belong to your lender.

We talk to people in this exact spot every week. Here's what we tell them.

First, understand what the cheque actually covers

When your insurer writes off a vehicle, they pay out what they calculate it was worth the moment before the accident — the actual cash value — minus your deductible. Not what you paid for it. Not what it costs to replace it at today's prices. What it was worth, used, that day.

If there's still a loan on the vehicle, your lender gets paid out of that settlement first. Whatever's left comes to you. And if you owed more than the car was worth — common in the first years of a loan, especially on longer terms — the settlement may not cover the balance at all. That leftover amount is called a shortfall, and unless you bought gap coverage, it's yours.

It stings. But knowing the exact number is the beginning of fixing it.

The mistake almost everyone makes next

Panic shopping. The rental coverage runs out in a week or two, work doesn't wait, and so people walk onto the nearest lot and take whatever they can get approved on that day, at whatever rate the desk offers — because they need keys in hand.

Rushed buyers overpay. Not because anyone tricked them, but because urgency is expensive. When you can't walk away, you have no leverage. And every finance desk in the country knows exactly what a person with a rental due back on Friday looks like.

Do these four things instead

Get your numbers on paper. Settlement amount, loan balance if any, and the difference between them. That's two phone calls: your insurer and your lender.

Set your budget by payment, not by price. What monthly amount fit your life before the accident? Start there — not at a sticker.

Get your financing approved before you shop. Approval first turns you from a desperate buyer into a cash buyer. It also means your credit situation gets handled in one honest conversation instead of becoming a surprise at a finance desk.

If there's a shortfall, deal with it in the open. In many cases the remaining balance can be worked into your new financing. That raises your payment, so it deserves an honest conversation about the trade-offs — but it should never be the reason you can't replace the car you need.

Where OCAL fits in

Write-off replacements are one of the situations we handle most, and honestly, one of the reasons we do what we do. An accident is not a character flaw. Neither is the credit dip that sometimes follows a hard year — if you're rebuilding, our bad credit financing team handles this every day. When you apply with us, a real person reads your application — your income, your timeline, your situation — not just three digits on a credit report.

Tell us your car was written off and when you need to be driving. We'll work the approval around your timeline, help you choose a vehicle that fits the payment rather than the other way around, and deliver it right to your driveway.

You've already had your bad week

The accident cost you enough — time, stress, probably some sleep. Replacing the car doesn't have to cost you another bad week.
