What documents do you need for a car loan in Canada?
The checklist by applicant type, why the lender asks, where to get each item in under a day, and what holds up more files than anything else.

Quick answer: Four things, for almost everyone: a valid driver's licence, proof of income (two recent pay stubs or 90 days of bank statements), proof of address within the last 90 days, and a void cheque or pre-authorized debit form. Self-employed applicants add two years of CRA Notices of Assessment, newcomers add their work permit or PR card and SIN, and applicants on benefits add the award letter. None of it is needed to apply; all of it is needed to fund.

Do you need documents to apply for a car loan?

No. At OCAL the application takes about two minutes and runs a soft credit check, and it asks for no paperwork at all. The documents come after the approval, when the lender attaches conditions to it: proof of income, of address, and of the account the payment comes from. Most applicants hear back the same business day. The three or four days from that answer to a signed contract are set almost entirely by how fast the documents arrive, and whether they arrive right the first time.

Files stall at the pay stub that does not show the employer's name, the bank statement sent as a phone screenshot, and the address on the licence that does not match the address on the bill.

Which documents do you need, by applicant type?

The table is the general pattern across lenders in OCAL's network. A specific lender may ask for less, and on a rebuilding file it may ask for more.

Applicant

Identity

Income

Address and banking

Extra

Employed (salary or hourly)

Valid driver's licence

Two most recent pay stubs showing employer and year-to-date; job letter plus one stub if new

Utility bill or bank statement within 90 days; void cheque or PAD form

Job letter if under three months at the employer

Self-employed or contractor

Valid driver's licence

Two most recent CRA Notices of Assessment plus 90 days (sometimes six months) of bank statements

Same as above

Business registration or licence; invoices or contracts if income is lumpy

Newcomer to Canada

Canadian driver's licence; passport

Pay stubs or job letter; bank statements if recently started

Canadian bank account; proof of address

Work permit or PR card (expiry matters), SIN confirmation

On benefits (EI, CPP-D, AISH, PWD, pension)

Valid driver's licence

Current award or entitlement statement plus 90 days of bank statements showing the deposits

Same as above

Some lenders want the benefit to outlast the loan; confirm early

What changes between rows is how income is proven, and that is where self-employed and newcomer files take longer.

Why does the lender ask for each one?

Driver's licence. Confirms identity and age; you cannot register or insure the vehicle without it. An expired licence stops the file; renew it first.

Proof of income. The lender is checking the payment against your income and that the income is real and recurring. Most lenders want roughly $1,800 to $2,000 gross per month that they can see on paper. Cash that never hits a bank account cannot be counted.

Proof of address. Residence stability is part of the credit decision, and the address has to match the licence and the registration. A mismatch is the most common reason a file bounces back.

Void cheque or PAD form. Payments are taken by pre-authorized debit, and the lender needs account details it can verify, not typed into an email.

Notices of Assessment. For self-employed income the lender wants the CRA's view of what you earned, not your own. Two years shows the income is established rather than a good quarter.

Permit or PR card. The lender is matching the loan term to how long you are allowed to be in Canada. A 60-month loan against an eight-month permit rarely gets approved; a longer permit or a co-signer usually solves it.

How do you get each document quickly?

Pay stubs: download the PDF from your employer's payroll portal. If they are printed, photograph the whole page flat and legible.

Bank statements: export the PDF statement from online banking, not a screenshot of the transaction list. The lender needs your name, the account number and the full period on the document.

Notice of Assessment: sign in to your CRA account, select Tax returns or Mail, and download the NOA for each year. It is available immediately once your return is assessed. The CRA also issues copies by phone at 1-800-959-8281 after verifying your identity.

Job letter: ask HR or your manager for a dated letter on letterhead stating position, start date, status (permanent, contract, probation) and gross pay.

Benefit statements: EI and CPP statements are in My Service Canada Account. AISH and PWD letters come from the provincial program office; the latest annual letter plus the deposits on your statement usually satisfy the lender.

SIN confirmation: Service Canada issues it. Lenders need the number, not the card.

Proof of address: a utility, phone or internet bill from the provider's portal, or the bank statement you already downloaded if it shows your current address.

What slows a file down?

Six things, and they are all avoidable.

Screenshots. A cropped image of a banking app is not a statement. Export the PDF.

The address mismatch. Licence says one address, bill says another. Update the licence or bring the bill that matches it.

Income that is real but invisible. Tips, side jobs and cash work that never get deposited. Start depositing everything today; in 90 days the statements will show it.

A new job on probation. Lenders can work with it, but they want the letter and the first stub, and some want probation to finish. Say so up front.

A short permit. Fewer months on the permit than on the loan. Renew first if you can, or plan for a co-signer.

The co-applicant with no documents. Every person on the contract needs the full set. Collect both sets at once.

Do you need insurance before the car is delivered?

Yes. The lender will not fund and OCAL will not deliver a vehicle that is not insured with the lender listed as the lienholder. In British Columbia you arrange it through an ICBC Autoplan broker; in Alberta you buy it from a private insurer. Once your vehicle is sourced, your specialist sends you the VIN; you insure it and send us the proof. Price it before you sign; the premium on the exact vehicle is part of the budget.

How does OCAL handle documents, and when is it not the right answer?

One specialist handles your file from application to delivery, and that person tells you the complete list once, after the approval, rather than asking for one more thing every two days. Documents go in through a secure upload, never by text message. Because the vehicle is sourced only after approval, from the OPENLANE marketplace and partner dealers, the paperwork is finished before the car is chosen, and funding and delivery follow two or three days after signing, to your door anywhere in British Columbia or Alberta.

OCAL is not the right answer when the income cannot be shown on paper at all. If you are paid in cash and have never deposited it, no lender in the network can count it today. Open the account, deposit every dollar for three months, and apply then.

Key facts to remember

Four documents cover most applicants: a valid driver's licence, proof of income, proof of address within 90 days, and a void cheque or PAD form.

No documents are needed to apply at OCAL; the lender asks for paperwork after the approval.

Self-employed applicants should expect to provide two years of CRA Notices of Assessment, available immediately in your CRA account once a return is assessed (Canada Revenue Agency).

Most lenders want roughly $1,800 to $2,000 of verifiable gross monthly income; cash that is never deposited cannot be counted.

Newcomers need a work permit or PR card and a SIN; lenders match the loan term to the permit's remaining validity.

Insurance with the lender as lienholder is required before funding and delivery: ICBC Autoplan in BC, a private insurer in Alberta.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a car loan without pay stubs?

Yes, if the income shows somewhere else the lender accepts: 90 days of bank statements with regular deposits, a job letter, CRA Notices of Assessment for self-employed income, or a benefit statement.

Do I need a job letter for a car loan?

Usually only if you have been at the employer less than about three months, are on probation, or your pay stubs do not show the employer and year-to-date figures clearly. A one-page dated letter on letterhead stating position, start date, status and pay is enough.

How recent do bank statements need to be?

Most lenders want the last 90 days, exported as PDF statements from online banking. Self-employed applicants may be asked for six months. Screenshots of a transaction list are the most common reason a statement is rejected.

Do I need a SIN to get a car loan in Canada?

In practice yes; lenders use it to pull your credit file and report your payments. Newcomers get a SIN from Service Canada, and the number alone is enough. Lenders also want to see a Canadian bank account.
